A funeral is scheduled Monday for former boxing champion Vernon Forrest, who was killed last weekend during an attempted robbery that went sour. The service will be at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, just east of Atlanta. It will be open to the public. Watson says notables, including boxers Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley and R&B singer Frankie Beverly, plus many of his adoring fans are expected to be in attendance.
The 38-year-old Forrest was found shot to death Saturday night. Police say he exchanged gunfire with at least two robbery suspects before being shot multiple times in the back.
Forrest was a former IBF welterweight and two-time WBC junior middleweight champion with a 41-3 career record with 29 knockouts. He was mostly remembered when he became the first boxer to defeat Sugar Shane Mosley.
