After the controversial bout between Mirko Cro Cop and Mustapha Al-Turk (poke to the eye that resulted in a TKO victory for Cro Cop), the UFC is now putting some serious thought into the implementation and use of an instant replay system, a choice that has many left with mixed emotions.
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Keith Kizer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission had this to say about it:
“We’re trying to find out if there is a way to do limited instant replay. We’re hoping to find a way to do that.”
There are still several areas of concern regarding the use, when will it take affect? During or after fights? Will a time out be called by referees or from an external source? Stopping a fight for even a short period of time can hinder the strategy of any MMA fighter; as a result, look for a hybrid system to be implemented whereby use is restricted only to after the outcome of the fight with mandatory rematches and / or suspensions.
